Democrat Kreiss-Tomkins takes early lead in Alaska governor’s race as ballot counting begins
With 65,000 ballots counted, the Democrat leads three Republicans and could become Alaska’s first Democratic governor since 2002.
Democrat Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins led Alaska's gubernatorial race with 49.1% of the vote as of Wednesday, November 4, 2026, seeking to replace term-limited Governor Mike Dunleavy. He could become Alaska's first Democratic governor since 2002.
Four finalists emerged from an August primary that winnowed a crowded field of 17 candidates. The race includes Kreiss-Tomkins, Republican Bernadette Wilson, former Anchorage Mayor Dave Bronson, and former Alaska Attorney General Treg Taylor.
Under Alaska's ranked-choice system, Kreiss-Tomkins needs more than 50% to avoid a second round of voting. If no candidate reaches that threshold, officials will determine the winner by redistributing second-choice ballots on November 18.
Endorsed by President Donald Trump, Republican Bernadette Wilson trails with 29.2% of the vote. Wilson campaigned on revitalizing what she described as a "stagnant" economy and promised large Permanent Fund dividends.
Describing himself as a "man of the middle," Kreiss-Tomkins pledged bipartisan collaboration on education and cost-of-living priorities. Election officials target November 25 to certify results, determining the path forward for Alaska's next administration.
