Demand for private number plate valuations soars by more than 150%

VRM Swansea says owners should use market evidence after testing found AI advice could misprice plates, as valuations rose 157% in six months.

  • VRM Swansea published a new guide, 'Setting a Market Price for Your Private Number Plate,' to help owners understand how to accurately assess their vehicle registrations.
  • Valuation requests increased by 157% in the first half of 2026, with VRM completing more than 3,000 valuations representing over £11 million worth of registrations.
  • Google's AI suggested the registration 'SUM 1' could be worth up to £500,000, while VRM estimated a more realistic retail price of £28,000 to £40,000 after assessing comparable registrations and buyer demand.
  • "One of the biggest advantages an owner has is knowledge," said Antony Clark of VRM Swansea, explaining that owners should combine personal insights with market evidence for the strongest valuations.
  • Unlike many collectibles, personalised registrations are government-issued and finite assets, with the DVLA reporting more than £300 million in annual revenues as demand continues to grow.
