Delays to UK Parliament renovation could add £420m to final bill
The watchdog says each year of delay adds £320 million to £420 million as Parliament weighs a full decant or a decades-long staged restoration.
- On Monday, the National Audit Office reported that delaying Palace restoration could add £420 million a year to the final bill, citing deteriorating fire safety systems, asbestos, and mechanical failures throughout the structure.
- Parliament faces choosing between a "full decant" estimated at up to £15.6 billion or a phased project lasting 38 to 61 years, with mechanical systems and fire safety comprising around 85% of total restoration costs.
- Currently, Parliament spends around £1.5 million a week on maintenance, while the NAO described a proposed seven-year, £3 billion initial package as a "sensible approach" to begin critical works.
- Sir Geoffrey Clifton-Brown, chair of the Public Accounts Committee, stated the project "will affect the working lives of parliamentarians and staff for many decades to come," emphasizing MPs need accurate information before voting.
- Parts of the Palace are almost 1,000 years old, and Both Houses must decide on the final restoration option by 2030 to preserve the UNESCO World Heritage Site amid mounting annual delay costs.
