Rarely Seen Deep-Sea Barreleye Fish Filmed in 4K
MBARI’s first 4K recording of the species came during an eight-day expedition, and researchers observed the fish for about 20 minutes.
- During an expedition off Central California, Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute researchers filmed a rare barreleye fish in 4K using the remotely operated vehicle Doc Ricketts approximately 1,970 feet underwater.
- Barreleye fish inhabit the ocean's twilight zone roughly 2,000 feet deep, making them exceptionally elusive; MBARI has encountered this species only 11 times despite nearly 40 years of exploration and roughly 7,000 dives.
- Research specialist Shannon Johnson spotted the fish as the team prepared to surface, prompting crew to rush to the control room; pilot Cameron Law then maneuvered the ROV for approximately 20 minutes of observation.
- The high-resolution 4K footage helps researchers better understand how deep-sea animals see in dim light. Senior scientist Steven Haddock noted the discovery "will inspire stewardship of the largest living space on Earth."
- These observations illuminate how Macropinna's transparent head and tubular eyes represent remarkable evolutionary adaptations. Haddock stated, "Macropinna reminds us of the surprising ways that animals have adapted to thrive in the ocean's midwater.

A team of researchers from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI), in the United States, managed to record in 4K resolution one of the most unusual fishes in the deep ocean: the Macropinna microstoma, known as transparent-headed fish or barrel-eye fish. The animal was found about 600 meters deep, about 90 kilometers from the coast of California, in the Pacific Ocean. The recording allows to observe details of its anatomy, especiall…
Deep-Sea Fish With See-Through Forehead That Looks Like A Robot Alien Was Just Seen For First Time In Years (4K Footage)
One of the strangest fish in the ocean, the barreleye fish (Macropinna microstoma), was just spotted for the first time in years by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI). This species of fish has a transparent forehead and tubular eyes that gives it the appearance of a literal alien and it was last spotted […]
‘Horrifying and beautiful’: Rarely seen barreleye fish filmed in extreme detail for first time
Known for its translucent, submersible-like head, this six-inch deep-sea denizen is rarely seen as it inhabits the ocean's twilight and midnight zones, some 2,000 to 2,600 feet underwater.
Rarely seen deep-sea barreleye fish filmed in 4K
During a recent expedition aboard the research vessel David Packard, MBARI scientists encountered a rarely seen barreleye fish (Macropinna microstoma). This sighting is MBARI's 11th observation of this unique deep-sea fish with a transparent head.
