Eyes to the Skies for December 2025: Full Cold Supermoon and Geminids Meteor Shower Steal the Show
December 2025 offers up to 75 meteors per hour during the Geminids, the last of three supermoons, and a rare interstellar comet visible with a telescope, NASA said.
- On December 4, The Old Farmer's Almanac marks the Cold Moon at 6:14 p.m., closing Moonfest '25 with the year's last supermoon, amid especially good stargazing this year.
- Earth's axial tilt of 23.4 degrees causes the Northern Hemisphere's winter solstice on December 21, producing the year's shortest day and minimal daylight.
- Geminids watchers should note the Geminids meteor shower peaks December 13–14, visible from 10 p.m. and producing 60 to 120 meteors per hour near Castor and Pollux, twin stars in Gemini.
- Comet 3I/ATLAS will make its closest pass on December 19 at around 170 million miles and requires a telescope, while the Hubble Space Telescope imaged it earlier this year at 277 million miles showing a teardrop dust cocoon.
- Ursid watchers can expect up to 10 meteors per hour on December 21–22 with best viewing before dawn looking north, while Jupiter brightens late December rising above the northeast horizon; observers should seek dark sites and let eyes adjust for optimal results.
