Ondo Govt Confirms 29 Deaths From Suspected Contaminated Alcoholic Beverage Consumption

- On Friday, Ondo State Commissioner for Health Banji Awolowo-Ajaka confirmed 29 deaths from suspected consumption of a contaminated alcoholic beverage in the Odigbo Local Government Area, where 60 cases have been recorded.
- The outbreak, which began in New Town on September 3, 2026, predominantly affects males aged 16 to 55, representing 95 per cent of cases, with a provisional case-fatality ratio of approximately 48.3 percent.
- Clinical features include headache, weakness, and visual disturbance, with eight deaths occurring after consumption of an alcoholic substance at an Araromi-Obu naming ceremony, where patients deteriorated rapidly.
- State authorities temporarily banned sale of locally brewed herbal beverages in the affected area and arrested several suspects, while the State Rapid Response Team investigates alongside the World Health Organisation and NAFDAC.
- With 36 blood and urine samples pending toxicological analysis, the government urges residents to avoid unverified substances and seek immediate medical attention at the General Hospital in Ore or UNIMED Teaching Hospital if symptoms develop.
