Deadly overnight storms batter Germany as Balkan countries fight wildfires

Severe weather also tore roofs off buildings, damaged dozens of homes and knocked out power as officials warned more storms could follow.

  • On Thursday, severe storms across Germany killed a 58-year-old woman in Waldorf, Rhineland-Palatinate, after a tree fell on two women seeking shelter. A 47-year-old woman sustained serious injuries in the incident.
  • Emergency calls surged overnight in Hesse, Thuringia, and Bavaria as storms impacted regional infrastructure. In Kronach, Bavaria, police evacuated about 3,500 guests from an outdoor village festival late Wednesday evening.
  • In Wetzlar, Hesse, storms damaged about 60 houses, with roofing debris blown as far as 100 meters. A tornado 78 kilometers southeast of Berlin tore off roofs and damaged cars.
  • The German Weather Service warned that further severe storms could occur later Thursday, particularly in Baden-W and Bavaria. While Germany experienced cooler temperatures, high temperatures persisted elsewhere in the region.
  • Separately, wildfires devastated the Balkans as a Russian firefighting plane landed in Serbia on Wednesday to assist. Firefighters from Dubrovnik joined efforts in Bosnia, with an extremely hot and dry summer fueling fires across Europe.
