Infant Found Dead at Utica Solid Waste Facility
Police said workers halted operations after finding the infant, and investigators have not yet determined her identity or how she reached the facility.
Staff at the Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority facility in Utica discovered the body of an infant girl in a sorting area on Wednesday, complicating origin investigations as the facility serves multiple Mohawk Valley counties.
Workers inspect waste at the sorting area "to first ensure that no dangerous or hazardous materials are received"; upon finding the infant, staff "immediately halted operations" and contacted the Utica Police Department.
The deceased infant is estimated to be about 2 weeks old; Utica Police Chief Mark Williams noted the investigation remains in preliminary stages, involving the New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
Williams made a public plea Thursday asking the infant's mother to come forward; police stated the mother is not currently considered a suspect, and investigators hope she can explain how the child ended up at the facility.
Anyone with information regarding the infant's identity or origin is urged to contact the Utica Police Department's Major Crimes Unit at 223-3556, or submit tips through Mohawk Valley CrimeStoppers via their mobile app.
