Authorities say the suspect, an Afghan national, ambushed two Guard members; 500 additional troops were deployed after the incident, officials confirmed.

- The National Guard's presence in Washington has been contested, with more than 300 West Virginia National Guard members deployed in August and about 160 Guard members recently volunteering to extend their service.
- At about 2:15 p.m. ET, Metropolitan Police said the suspect came around a corner and ambushed the Guard during a high-visibility patrol, and nearby Guard members subdued him within moments after an exchange of gunfire while emergency responders transported all three to a hospital.
- The administration ordered additional National Guard members to Washington, and federal agencies including the FBI and ATF responded after the shooting, described as a targeted ambush, DHS said.
- With the motive still unclear, investigators including the FBI are working to confirm the suspect's background as the Department of Homeland Security linked the shooter to parole under Operation Allies Welcome on Sept. 8, 2021.
