Daisane to Make History as 1st Somali American to Represent Central Minnesota
Daisane won the open seat with 51.6% of the vote after a second straight campaign in the Republican-leaning district.
- On Tuesday, Nov. 3, childcare center owner Abdi Daisane defeated St. Cloud City Council President Mike Conway for the Minnesota House District 14A seat, securing 51.6% of the vote and flipping the Republican-leaning district.
- Daisane, an immigrant who spent his childhood in a refugee camp in Kenya after fleeing Somalia's civil war, previously lost this seat in 2024 by about 13 percentage points. Nearly 18% of the district was born in another country.
- Campaign finance reports show Daisane raised around $45,000 and spent about $42,000, while Conway raised around $48,000. Outside groups spent an additional $51,000 on independent expenditures opposing Daisane.
- Daisane will become the first Somali American to represent central Minnesota in the state Legislature. "We're not going to let division and the rhetoric happening around the country toward Somali Americans in Minnesota tell us what to do," he told St. Cloud LIVE on Thursday, Nov. 5.
- Before assuming office in January, Daisane plans to prioritize family time and celebrate his wedding anniversary next week. "I'm becoming husband and father again, a thing I've been lacking while campaigning," he said.
