How a bank scandal toppled a trusted Trump ally
The US President Donald Trump has made no secret of trying to turn South America into his private backyard, but the people of one country in the region have dealt that plan a griveous blow.
Elected president in 2023 with 43% of the votes, he presented his resignation this Thursday but Congress failed to meet the quorum to vote on the resignation. This Friday the Senate of Paraguay dismissed him as president.
The president will appear before the Senate this Friday, while he remains formally in office after the failure of the session to discuss his resignation. On Thursday, the Upper House was constituted as a court of law after Deputies approved the charge against him for alleged improper performance of his duties.
Congress must decide whether to accept his resignation or move forward in a political trial that could remove him and leave him out of the lifetime senadury, in the midst of the crisis unleashed by the Ueno Bank case.
