Officials Believe Man Died Trying to Save Dog that Chased Geese Into Icy Ohio Lake
Emergency crews recovered the bodies of an unidentified man and two dogs from a 30-foot-deep icy pond; water temperature was about 27 degrees, officials said.
- On Wednesday, crews recovered the bodies of a man and two dogs from a pond at Voice of America MetroPark in West Chester after hours of icy search efforts, West Chester Fire Chief Rick Prinz said.
- Maintenance workers found a cellphone, keys and a dog leash with shoe prints leading to the pond at Voice of America MetroPark, prompting a water search as officials say the man entered to rescue dogs that broke through the ice.
- Crews used sonar and divers and had to cut ice with an ax and sledgehammer to reach victims; responders quickly pulled one dog, then recovered a man and second dog after about an hour and a half in 27-degree water.
- The Butler County Coroner identified the victim as 36-year-old Sun Yue of Mason, Ohio, listed `drowning` as the cause, and multiple agencies including the Hamilton County Dive Team assisted recovery.
- Prinz warned that near-freezing water triggers a dive reflex, and Jackie Hunter said, `We walk here all the time and we probably looked at this gentleman in the face and just said hi and just kept moving, so we are heartbroken about it.
