Unifor Names General Motors as Next U.S. Automaker for Contract Talks
Unifor will use the Ford contract as a template as it seeks wage gains and job security for more than 4,600 GM members.
- On Tuesday, Unifor named General Motors as its next target for contract negotiations, with talks set to commence on August 10 at the Toronto Sheraton Centre covering more than 4,600 members.
- Following a three-year Ford Motor agreement finalized earlier this month, Unifor President Lana Payne said the deal establishes a strong pattern for the Detroit-based automaker that GM is expected to follow.
- The Ford deal includes 3% annual wage increases, a $12,000 bonus, and $900 million in investments. Unifor represents more than 4,600 members at GM facilities including Oshawa Assembly, St. Catharines Propulsion, and the Woodstock Distribution Centre.
- GM faces immediate pressure from laid-off members as the CAMI Assembly plant in Ingersoll remains idle following Chevrolet BrightDrop van production's end in October. About 1,200 employees are currently sidelined at the facility.
- Unifor will next target Stellantis, which faces about 3,000 layoffs at its Brampton Assembly Plant, positioning the union's strategy differently from U.S. UAW contracts that do not expire until May 1, 2028.
