Canada promises $37 million in humanitarian aid for civilians in Lebanon
Canada's $37.7 million aid will assist displaced Lebanese civilians with food, shelter, medical care and clean water through UN and Red Cross support.
- On Thursday, Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand and Randeep Sarai announced that The Carney government is committing $37.7 million in humanitarian aid to Lebanon for civilians caught in the crossfire between Israel and Hezbollah.
- Hostilities that began in late February, triggered by the United States' war against Iran which Israel joined, have displaced nearly 700,000 people in Lebanon as Israel and the Iranian-backed Hezbollah continue trading blows.
- The United Nations and the Red Cross will facilitate distribution of the funds. "The funding announced today will help our partners provide urgent support including shelter, food, clean water and medical supplies for those affected," Anand said.
- Beyond immediate aid, the government has facilitated the departure of nearly 1,000 Canadians and permanent residents to safe third countries, while nearly 8,000 Canadians and family members have returned to Canada from the Middle East since Feb. 28.
- Foreign ministers from the Group of Seven will meet in Paris on March 24 and 25 to discuss diplomatic efforts to end the Iran crisis.
