Coulson Aviation's CC-130H Hercules Purchase Could Be a Boon to Island City

The sale will expand Coulson Aviation’s firefighting fleet and add work at its Port Alberni facility, company officials said.

  • Coulson Aviation purchased 10 retired CC-130H Hercules aircraft from the Royal Canadian Air Force to convert into aerial firefighting tankers at its Alberni Valley Regional Airport facility.
  • These aircraft are part of a fleet of 12 retired by the Royal Canadian Air Force in January 2026, with the remaining two designated for museum display; the announcement occurred at Cascade Aerospace before the Abbotsford Airshow.
  • Were extremely honoured to be chosen the awardee of these airplanes," said Wayne Coulson, adding that Coulson Aviation has already converted American Hercules into tankers for wildfire fighting in Canada and globally.
  • Port Alberni students Ashley Keen and Jacob Spencer, training in the Aircraft Maintenance Engineer-Structures program, could work at the facility after completing their two-month course and three-year employment contracts.
  • The sale remains conditional pending Transport Canada regulatory approvals and completion of contractual arrangements, after which crews will spend thousands of hours converting the Hercules into specialized tankers.
