US Coast Guard Awards $3.5 Billion Contract for Five Arctic Cutters
The five cutters will add a modern icebreaking fleet as the Coast Guard cites rising Russian and Chinese activity in the Arctic.
- On Wednesday, U.S. shipbuilder Davie Defense Inc. finalized its contract with the Coast Guard to build and deliver five Arctic Security Cutters designed to conduct missions in the world's most challenging maritime environments.
- The overall procurement plan calls for 11 vessels to expand the icebreaker fleet, addressing President Donald Trump's executive orders to secure maritime approaches against increasing geopolitical threats in the Arctic.
- Davie plans to invest up to $1 billion in improvements at former Gulf Copper yards in Galveston and Port Arthur, Texas, with three ships constructed there and two others built in Helsinki, Finland.
- "Finalizing this contract represents decisive action to guarantee American security in the Arctic," said Admiral Kevin Lunday, commandant of the Coast Guard, noting the agreement aligns with the trilateral ICE Pact.
- The first cutter is set for delivery in 2028, with the series completing by early 2035, while Rep. John Garamendi has questioned reliance on foreign shipyards despite the $25 billion budget boost expiring in 2029.
