Meet the Cat and Dog Rescued by a Drone From the Ukrainian Front Line
The brigade said the drone flight covered 10 kilometers to move the animals out safely after troops found them at a front-line shelter.
- Earlier this month, the Ukrainian 14th Separate Mechanized Brigade used a drone to evacuate a cat named Barsik and a dog named Zagybluk from the middle of the battlefield.
- The animals became regular visitors to brigade positions, but retrieving them from the dugout proved too dangerous for human soldiers to attempt.
- Nadiya Zamryga, brigade press officer, said the evacuation had a happy ending: Barsik is set to reunite with his "cat dad," a recovering wounded soldier, while Zagybluk thrives at a rear position.
- Since the invasion began, UA Animals has evacuated more than 10,000 animals, with Inga Sakada, director of operations, noting veterinary teams travel to frontline zones twice monthly treating hundreds of animals.
- Despite these efforts, ongoing threats persist: landmines left by Russian troops in areas like Chernobyl kill wildlife, and owners must often leave farm animals such as a cow named Lypka behind during evacuations.
