Congresswoman Says Target of ICE Operation in Fatal Maine Shooting Wasn't up for Removal
Pingree said ICE was actually pursuing Durán Guerrero’s roommate, who owned the car, as investigators continue reviewing the fatal shooting.
On Monday, Rep. Chellie Pingree revealed that Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents targeted the roommate of 25-year-old Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero during the July 13 shooting in Biddeford, Maine.
Pingree called the discovery a "shocking revelation in clear contradiction to what ICE" and the Department of Homeland Security previously claimed about conducting targeted surveillance on an individual with a final removal order.
Guerrero held a pending asylum case and valid work permit rather than a final removal order; Democratic Congress members are demanding answers regarding the officer's history of violent behavior and mental health issues.
President Donald Trump opposed policy changes that would have suspended most ICE vehicle stops, while the Office of the Maine Attorney General continues investigating the fatal shooting.
Despite agency defenses, Pingree noted that basic questions remain unanswered by the Trump administration, even as the Department of Homeland Security maintains the officer acted due to public safety concerns.
