Police-recorded sexual violence up 94% since 2014, homicides down 11%
Eurostat has conducted a study based on data recorded by police in the European Union, and has published that sexual violence has increased by 94% and rape by 150% between 2014 and 2024. The French State is the country with the highest number of registered cases, followed by Germany, Sweden and Spain.
Police officers from EU Member States recorded more than 250,000 crimes of sexual violence in 2024, of which almost 100,000 (38 per cent) were rapes, 150 per cent more than a decade ago, according to data published by Eurostat on Wednesday.
Between 2014 and 2024, sexual violence increased by 94% (+124,350 cases) and rape by 150% (+58,983). During this period, the former increased continuously by almost 10% per year on average, and the latter by 7%. The authors of Eurostat's note remain very cautious, avoiding any explanation of the causes of this sharp increase, limiting themselves to saying that it "may be linked to increased public awareness, which affects the reporting rate."
