Commercial whaling of minke whales began off the coast of Nemuro, Hokkaido, on the 1st, with two whales caught and landed at Nemuro Port (Nemuro City). One whale was also caught and landed off the coast of Aomori Prefecture. According to the Japan Small Whaling Association (Fukuoka City), whaling had started off the coasts of Miyagi and Aomori Prefectures in March, but this is the first catch of the year.
