Comcast Turns Your Xfinity WiFi Into a Home Motion Detector

The free opt-in feature turns newer Xfinity gateways into motion sensors and may share related data with third parties under Comcast’s policy.

  • On Tuesday, Comcast launched Xfinity Shield, a new security platform combining Wi-Fi motion sensing, cybersecurity, and family controls for Xfinity Internet customers at no additional cost.
  • The new Wi-Fi Motion feature detects movement by monitoring radio frequency signal disruptions between the Xfinity Gateway and connected devices, providing security awareness without recording video or requiring additional hardware.
  • Comcast also introduced a $15-a-month Shield Select tier adding an indoor camera and sensors, complementing a network that protects 36 connected devices by blocking 30 million threats daily.
  • Because the feature is opt-in, users must enable Wi-Fi Motion through the Xfinity app; however, Comcast may disclose generated data to third parties, including law enforcement, without further notice.
  • Comcast product chief Fraser Stirling said the company plans to introduce more features to Xfinity Shield next year, positioning the current rollout as a foundation for advanced security use cases.
