Husker Running Back Mekhi Nelson Arrested in Florida
The third-year Nebraska back was booked on a misdemeanor battery charge after an alleged altercation with his pregnant girlfriend, and a July 9 arraignment is set.
Nebraska Cornhuskers running back Mekhi Nelson was arrested Monday in Key West, Florida, on a battery charge after police responded to a disturbance at the Blue Flamingo Resort around noon.
According to the police report, the argument escalated after Nelson became upset with how long his girlfriend, who is seven months pregnant, was taking to get ready for their vacation.
Nelson entered the offseason as a favorite to lead Nebraska's backfield in 2026 after rushing for 147 yards and two touchdowns last season, competing with teammates Jamal Rule and Isaiah Mozee.
Records show Nelson is scheduled to be arraigned on July 9 at 9 a.m., while the Nebraska Athletic Department stated it is aware of the arrest but has no further comment.
Nelson told police he was "just like his father," who was incarcerated during his childhood, amid reports of prior violence between the couple, creating uncertainty for fall camp.
