On Friday, a methane gas explosion at a private coal mine in Gelik, near Kilimli, Turkey, killed three workers and injured five others. The blast occurred at around 10 in the morning.
Local authorities identified the cause as "firedamp," or flammable gas, at the private facility owned by Demir Madencilik. Authorities launched an investigation to determine regulatory compliance.
Turkish Minister of Health Kemal Memi_olu stated, "One of the five injured is in critical condition and is undergoing treatment." Officials coordinated urgent patient transfers to Ankara for specialized care.
Zonguldak Governor Osman Hacibektasoglu initially reported two deaths while rescuers attempted to reach one trapped miner, but state media later confirmed the third worker died in the explosion.
The independent monitoring group Worker Health and Work Safety Assembly, or ISIG, reported 1,267 miners died in workplace accidents between 2013 and 2025. This incident follows a pattern including the 2014 Soma disaster that killed 301.
