After many years of negotiations, the government agrees on a new climate law, which provides for climate neutrality for 2040. However, without sanctions or commitment - and still without a plan.
After the agreement of ÖVP, SPÖ and NEOS at the end of August, the new climate law is now officially entering the assessment phase. The paper aims at climate neutrality in 2040 – but brings with it still open points, a location clause and clear criticism of representations.
On Friday, the Federal Government sent the long-awaited climate law in review. At a press conference, Environment Minister Norbert Totschnig (ÖVP) said that the goal of climate neutrality by 2040 is to be achieved. A first "climate roadmap" is to be developed by the end of 2027.
By the end of next year, the first climate roadmap will be in place. The government will also remain committed to achieving climate neutrality in 2040 and thus being more ambitious than the EU.
