Cigna To Exit Obamacare In 2027, Affecting Coverage For 369,000
The insurer is leaving a market where 369,000 people will need new coverage as it shifts toward pharmacy services and employer plans.
On Thursday, The Cigna Group announced it will exit Affordable Care Act exchanges by the end of this year and initiate a strategic review of its eviCore business to focus on core growth platforms.
COO Brian Evanko stated that ACA plans and eviCore fell short of expectations, driving Cigna to depart the exchanges for reasons similar to its Medicare exit last year.
ACA plans have become increasingly unaffordable after the Republican-led Congress allowed generous subsidies to expire at the end of last year; Cigna reported $1.7 billion in first-quarter 2026 profit.
The exit leaves 369,000 Americans searching for new coverage in 11 states, continuing a trend after CVS Health's Aetna departed the exchanges following 2025.
CEO David Cordani will transition to Executive Chair in July 2026, with Brian Ivanko succeeding him as CEO to sharpen focus on pharmacy services and employer-sponsored plans covering 18 million members.
