Chris Johnson Seeking Revival of Ice Bucket Challenge as He Continues His Fight Against ALS
Johnson is urging fans and former teammates to join the campaign again after saying the original challenge raised an estimated $220 million worldwide, the ALS Therapy Development Institute said.
Former NFL running back Chris Johnson is reviving the Ice Bucket Challenge to raise ALS awareness, posting on Instagram Wednesday two days after announcing his diagnosis on "Good Morning America."
According to the ALS Therapy Development Institute, the original campaign previously raised an estimated $135 million in the United States and $220 million worldwide to fight the nervous system disease.
Johnson, the 40-year-old former Tennessee Titans star known as CJ2K, was inspired after watching former Utah basketball player Hunter Mecum post a video dumping ice water to honor him.
Johnson challenged former All-Pro running back Marshawn Lynch and former Titans teammates LenDale White and Adam "Pacman" Jones to participate, later sharing Instagram Story posts showing them getting doused with water.
During his "Good Morning America" interview, Johnson told co-anchor Michael Strahan he has no family history of ALS, with doctors believing his case is sporadic ALS, the way the vast majority of cases occur.
