BYD leads Chinese automaker selloff on weakening sales
BYD’s January sales dropped 30.1% due to weak demand for plug-in hybrids and domestic competition, extending a five-month decline despite global expansion efforts.
- On Sunday BYD, the Chinese electric vehicle maker, reported January sales fell 29.1%, selling 210,051 vehicles globally.
- Amid tough domestic competition, plug-in hybrids which account for more than half of BYD's sales fell 29.1% in January, prompting upgraded hybrid models last month.
- Production fell 29.1% in January, extending losses since July last year, while NEV exports reached 100,482 units.
- To offset domestic weakness, BYD is expanding with a new EV plant in Hungary expected this year, plus facilities in Brazil and Thailand and planned plants in Indonesia and Turkey.
- Despite meeting a revised 4.6 million target in 2025, BYD has not explained the downward revision and is yet to announce a 2026 target, after a 150.7% surge abroad helped it unseat Tesla.
