China, US arrest 5 in joint drug smuggling investigation, Xinhua reports
The joint case led to arrests of two Chinese nationals and three U.S. nationals and the seizure of protonitazene and bromazolam, Xinhua said.
- Chinese and U.S. anti-narcotics authorities arrested five suspects in early April during simultaneous operations in Liaoning, Guangdong, Florida, and Nevada, Xinhua reported Monday. The joint investigation seized protonitazene and bromazolam, synthetic drugs used in trafficking networks.
- Yu Haibin, deputy director-general of the Narcotics Control Bureau, described the partnership as essential to deterring criminals. "If we do not join forces, criminals will be more than happy because criminals do cooperate," Yu told NBC News.
- This operational success follows recent collaborative milestones: last month the U.S. handed over a Chinese fugitive suspected of drug crimes to Beijing, and in February Hubei province authorized seven arrests during a trafficking campaign.
- Despite progress, officials cite the 10% fentanyl tariff as a significant obstacle to fuller cooperation. President Donald Trump lowered the rate to 10% from 20% in October, though the Supreme Court invalidated the measure in February.
- Beijing confirmed President Trump's state visit for later this week, where leaders will discuss "major issues concerning China U.S. relations as well as world peace and development," said Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun.
