China Has Created The First Ever Meltdown-Proof Nuclear Reactor

Summary
China has built the first large-scale nuclear power station that is resistant to meltdowns, known as the High Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor Pebble-Bed Module (HTR-PM). Traditional reactors need powered cooling systems, which can fail and cause meltdowns, as seen in the Fukushima disaster. The HTR-PM, however, uses "passively" safe pebble-bed reactors that can shut down without human intervention or external power. These reactors use small fuel "pebbles" surrounded by graphite to moderate neutron activity, which helps spread and dissipate heat more effectively.
