Supervisor at northern Alberta private school charged with assault after child disciplined with belt
Police say the child had bruising and red marks after belt discipline, and investigators seized a machine belt and school records.
- On Tuesday, Alberta RCMP charged school supervisor Eva Bueckert, 37, of Cleardale, Alta., with assault with a weapon after she allegedly used a belt to physically discipline a student.
- Fort Vermilion RCMP launched the investigation after a parent reported on May 20 that their child had bruising and red marks from discipline at school; investigators discovered the practice was part of a collective constitution signed by parents at three Mennonite schools.
- Police searched the schools and seized a machine belt along with related documentation, while officers determined the educators at Blumenort, Wilson Prairie, and Tompkins Mennonite schools are not accredited teachers but are considered adults supervising children.
- Cpl. Scott Coleman of the Western Alberta District General Investigation Section said authorities notified the Alberta Ministry of Education and Childcare to prevent further harm. Bueckert is scheduled to appear in the Alberta Court of Justice in Fort Vermilion on August 11.
- The allegations against Bueckert have not been tested in court. While these Mennonite communities preserve their faith with autonomy, police stated corporal punishment constitutes a criminal offense and will be treated as such.
