Child abductor freed by mistake 'strolled around' London and went to pub before fleeing UK, court told
Police said Ifedayo Adeyeye may have left the UK after prison staff failed to alert them for three days, with 179 inmates wrongly released last year.
- Prison staff at HMP Pentonville mistakenly released 58-year-old Ifedayo Adeyeye on April 21, ignoring a 12-month sentence imposed the previous day for abducting his five-year-old son, Laurys N Djosse Adeyeye.
- Mr Justice Hayden previously jailed Adeyeye for contempt of court after he abducted Laurys from his mother, Claire N Djosse, in France in July 2024, defying the judge's order to return the child.
- After his release, Adeyeye "strolled about" London and had "quite a lot of drink" at a pub before jailers reported him missing three days later, prompting Justice Hayden to criticize the "alarming lack of urgency" from prison staff.
- Police told the court Adeyeye may have entered Spain on April 22, while Chris Bryden, representing Ms N Djosse, argued the state failed the mother by not informing the Metropolitan Police promptly.
- Data from the Ministry of Justice showed 179 inmates were wrongly released between April 2025 and March 2026, prompting the MoJ to invest up to £82 million to address what it describes as a prison system in crisis.
