Chainguard Releases The AI Exploit Gap Report
The survey found 90% of security leaders say AI-enabled attacks have changed their jobs more than any other issue in the past decade.
A new Chainguard Survey of 1,300 security leaders reveals that 77% expect an attacker to exploit a vulnerability at their organization in the next year. AI-powered threats are rapidly outpacing the ability of human teams to defend against them.
AI-Powered vulnerability discovery now outpaces human remediation, creating a significant exploit gap. Automated attacks evolve faster than traditional defense mechanisms can address, leaving security teams struggling to keep pace.
Despite these risks, 54% of surveyed leaders admit their companies knowingly leave high or critical vulnerabilities unpatched at least sometimes. Security teams often face difficult trade-offs between addressing vulnerabilities and maintaining revenue-generating work.
Nearly all security leaders report that team burnout negatively impacts their ability to defend against evolving threats. Organizations are responding by reallocating staff to vulnerability remediation, though many still struggle to secure adequate budgets.
Organizations are actively shifting operational strategies, including adopting secure-by-default software components and reducing third-party dependencies. These changes aim to lessen the burden on security teams as AI-driven exploitation becomes more pervasive.
