Tanzania: Opposition Leader Tundu Lissu Jailed for Four Years
Chadema says it will appeal and seek bail pending review, arguing the 4-year term exceeds the time already spent in custody.
On Friday, November 6, 2026, Tanzania's High Court sentenced opposition leader Tundu Lissu, chairman of Chadema, to four years in prison for incitement after acquitting him of treason following 577 days in custody.
Prosecutors charged Lissu following an April 3, 2025, meeting at Chadema's headquarters in Dar es Salaam, where he allegedly encouraged supporters to "block the election" and "mobilize rebellion," leading to his arrest six days later in Mbinga.
Although cleared of treason, judges invoked the Criminal Procedure Act to convict Lissu of incitement, an offense not among his original charges. "All this was political persecution. Excuses were created to imprison me," Lissu told the court after the verdict.
Chadema's chief legal officer, Dr. Rugemeleza Nshala, announced the party will appeal and seek bail, arguing the four-year sentence combined with time already served exceeds the five-year maximum penalty for incitement.
The verdict serves as a data point in Washington's ongoing review of Tanzania ties, active since December 4, 2025, focused on election violence and repression of political opposition following the disputed October 2025 election.
