"Becoming Chinese," a playful social media trend, has evolved into an immersive cultural experience and is considered the right way to understand China during the Spring Festival, or the Chinese New Year. A CGTN survey of global netizens finds that 80.8 percent of respondents believe Chinese culture has shifted from one-way export to widespread resonance, with many expressing a desire to "become Chinese" over the Spring Festival.
While the multi-day celebrations for the Chinese New Year are in full swing in parts of Asia, a curious trend is taking off in the West: "Chinamaxxing. In videos on TikTok, the "Chinese becoming" has recently been celebrated, for example, by drinking warm water, eating Congee or practicing Tai Chi. For commentators, the trend is an expression of China's growing "Soft Power."
