Former CEO Charged with Embezzling $5.2M From a Camp for Sick Kids Co-Founded by Paul Newman
Christopher L. Butler allegedly stole $5.2 million over seven years by writing fraudulent checks and tampering with records, discovered by a new controller in 2025.
- On Jan. 12, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office said former Painted Turtle chief executive Christopher L. Butler was charged with embezzling $5 million and 15 felony counts.
- Serving at times as controller, Butler allegedly concealed transactions until a newly hired controller discovered irregularities in August, prosecutors say.
- According to the complaint, Butler wrote thousands of fraudulent checks, tampered with computer records last year, and stole organization computers, causing about $50,000 in property loss or damage.
- He is being held on $835,000 bail and prosecutors say the case will be handled by Deputy District Attorney Steve Dickman, and
- The Painted Turtle, which relies on donations, has brought in independent auditors and cooperated fully with law enforcement while spokesperson Glenn Bozarth said it plans to continue programming despite recovery questions.
