The latest public television poll ZDF places the Christian Democratic Union at just 6%, just one point above the barrier needed to enter the regional parliament.
New state parliaments will be elected in Berlin and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern on Sunday. While the right-wing populist alternative for Germany (AfD) could continue its triumphant march in the far north-east of the country, the post-communist left for the first time will win first place in the capital. Polls again leave a debacle for the CDU by Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz, over whose imminent defeat has been vehemently speculated for days.
