The apple harvest in Burgenland starts with failures of up to 30 percent. Dryness and heat also ensure too small fruits.
This year Hungary is expected to have the weakest apple crop in the last fifty years, aggravated by adverse weather conditions, especially drought and heat. According to an analysis by the Hungarian Fruit and Vegetable Interprofessional Organization FruitVeb, frost damage in spring already caused a significant yield loss of 60 percent, which was further aggravated by summer heat stress.
The professional organization estimates that only 130-140 thousand tons of apples can be produced in Hungary this year, which is far below the 400-500 thousand tons available in favorable years. The post Catastrophically poor apple crop expected in Hungary first appeared on 24.hu.
“This year’s apple harvest could be one of the worst of the century,” Zsolt Bűdi, CEO of Bács-Zöldért Zrt., told HelloVidék. According to the expert, many domestic apple growers can report practically 100 percent frost damage, almost regardless of the variety. This is particularly serious, as apples are one of the most important domestic fruits, of which many people pick larger quantities in the fall or buy for the winter.
