'United in Grief': House of Commons Holds Moment of Silence over Wainwright Tragedy
The fire killed four soldiers and sent 39 others to hospital after a wind shift pushed flames toward a training exercise, officials said.
On Monday, the House of Commons held a moment of silence for four soldiers killed in Saturday's fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, with Prime Minister Mark Carney leading the remembrance for a tragedy that "touches every corner of the country."
Training exercises for about 350 troops turned fatal on Saturday when a sudden wind surge pushed a grass fire toward soldiers at the base, located 200 km southeast of Edmonton.
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith reported 39 other troops were hospitalized, with 19 in critical condition; Sgt. Wong of the Loyal Edmonton Regiment and three members of the 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Infantry were among the four deceased.
Wounded troops receive care at four hospitals across Edmonton, Calgary, and Red Deer, while King Charles III and politicians across Canada offered tributes for the fallen service members.
The tragedy has deeply impacted the Canadian Armed Forces, as the nation mourns personnel from Edmonton, Prince Albert, North Vancouver, and Langley, while medical teams continue providing intensive care for those in critical condition.
