Ipanema has evidence that the bottom of the oceans is less known than the surface of the Moon. Researchers have found only four kilometers from the beach, in the vicinity of the Cagarras Islands, entire pink painted ecosystems. They are rodolite banks, coral-like reefs, but built by calcareous algae and serve as cradles and homes for fish, crustaceans, molluscs and a number of other marine animals.
