Car wash attendant’s small gestures make big impact on boy with autism
The attendant’s greetings, treats and window drawings made routine visits feel special, and the family said the gestures helped a 5-year-old boy with autism feel safe.
- At ScrubaDub in Salem, New Hampshire, attendant Benjamin Pineiro draws characters on vehicle windows for children, including 5-year-old Liam. For Liam, who has autism, these friendly greetings have become the highlight of their visits.
- Recognizing that some children are scared of the car wash, Pineiro uses a marker to sketch Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse on windows. For Pineiro, it takes only two minutes to turn an ordinary errand into something extraordinary.
- In May, Liam's mother, Crystal Albrecht, wrote to ScrubaDub to express her gratitude. "For families like ours, they are not small at all," Albrecht wrote of Pineiro's gestures.
- Staff at ScrubaDub were moved by the letter, with Alex Paisner, the director of people and culture, noting "We were tearing up in the office." The message reflected the customer service the business strives to provide.
- Albrecht hopes the story reminds others that brief moments of kindness can have lasting effect. Pineiro said seeing Liam outside the vehicle was special, particularly when the boy held his hand.
