Car maker recalling 48,000 vehicles over a fire risk caused by human error
Volkswagen will inspect and repair transmission wiring free of charge to prevent fire risk in 48,165 Jetta vehicles, with owner notifications starting May 8, NHTSA said.
On March 11, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration posted a recall of 48,165 Volkswagen Jetta vehicles in the U.S. over a potential fire risk.
Assembly records show the transmission ground wire may not have been properly connected during the assembly process, attributed to 'human error' in manufacturing.
Volkswagen reported at least six claims across the U.S. and Canada, including three melted-wire incidents and three engine-compartment fires, while regulators said less than 1% of recalled vehicles are expected to have the defect.
Owners can bring recalled vehicles to Volkswagen dealerships for free inspection and repair under recall number 97TC, and technicians will fix any disconnections at no cost; owner notification letters will be mailed on May 8, 2026.
VINs tied to the recall became searchable on the NHTSA website March 13, 2026, covering Jetta 2025–2026 model years, and dealers must repair affected vehicles before sale.
