Suspect, Victim Identified in Deadly Attack at Capitola Mall
Police said the attack was random and an adult male suspect was detained as investigators processed the scene.
On Monday, July 20, 2026, a 73-year-old woman named Rachell Summers was fatally stabbed at the Capitola Mall; police arrested 19-year-old Tyler Liebelt in connection with the attack.
Detectives believe the stabbing was a "random act of violence," Capitola Police Chief Sarah Ryan said, with "no indication that the suspect and victim knew one another prior to the attack."
Law enforcement sealed off Clares Street with tape, deploying at least 10 police vehicles and one ambulance to the scene near the Target parking lot.
Authorities took Liebelt into custody in the 1400 block of 41st Avenue, where he remains in jail without bail facing first-degree murder and felony charges.
The mall's manager has increased security, and Capitola Police Chief Ryan announced extra patrols, emphasizing the incident was "very uncommon" for the community.
