Canadian fighter defeated by U.S. at Trump’s UFC birthday
UFC Freedom 250 drew protests in Washington as Sean O'Malley beat Aiemann Zahabi on the White House grounds.
On Sunday, Canadian Aiemann Zahabi was defeated by American Sean "Suga" Malley on the White House South Lawn during UFC Freedom 250, celebrating 250 years of the USA and President Donald Trump's 80th birthday.
Ceremonial weigh-ins took place on the Ellipse in Washington on Saturday, where excited fans in America-themed apparel gathered for the outdoor celebration despite sweltering heat.
Aiemann Zahabi, a 38-year-old from Laval, Que., heard boos and "USA" chants from the crowd during the fight, though he stated competing near the Oval Office was not a political statement despite previously endorsing Trump.
Several demonstrations against the event occurred throughout Washington on Sunday, coinciding with the fight night festivities held on the White House grounds.
Kelly Geraldine Malone reported for The Canadian Press on Sunday, noting that organizers framed the UFC-themed gathering as a cultural display marking the country's 250-year anniversary.
