Canada’s Fernandez Beats Uzbekistan’s Rakhimova to Reach Final in Japan
Fernandez won in 1 hour 54 minutes and will face either Diana Shnaider or Mia Pohankova for her seventh WTA Tour title.
On Saturday, Canada's Leylah Fernandez reached the Pan Pacific Open final in Tokyo by defeating Uzbekistan's Kamilla Rakhimova 7-5, 6-3 in semifinal play.
Fernandez, world number 23, won her first title of the season in Singapore last month and reached the final of last week's Ningbo Open in China, where she lost to Elena Rybakina.
Overcoming early breaks in both sets, Fernandez needed one hour 54 minutes to complete the victory, hitting nine aces against Rakhimova.
Sunday's final will feature Fernandez against either Russia's Diana Shnaider or Slovakia's Mia Pohankova, with the Canadian seeking her seventh WTA Tour title at the WTA 500 tournament.
Rakhimova, ranked world number 66, entered the main draw as a lucky loser after qualifying elimination and reached her first-ever WTA Tour semifinal appearance.
