Canada's trade surplus widens to more than four-year high in August
Exports to the United States rose 8.1% as companies rushed shipments ahead of new tariffs, helping lift the surplus above forecasts, StatsCan said.
On Tuesday, StatsCan reported that Canada's trade surplus widened to C$4.2 billion in August, as exporters accelerated shipments to the United States before President Donald Trump's new tariffs took effect on August 22.
Total exports rose 2.5%, driven by an 8.1% surge in shipments to the United States as firms raced to beat the new tariff implementation before the August 22 deadline.
This front-loading effort pushed Canada's trade surplus with the United States to a 19-month high of C$11.2 billion, while imports fell 2%, reflecting strategic acceleration across consumer goods and machinery sectors.
Meanwhile, Canada's trade deficit with non-U.S. partners widened to C$7.0 billion from C$5.3 billion in July, signaling challenges in diversifying away from American markets amid tariff pressures.
Economists expect September data to clarify whether the August surplus represents a temporary front-loading anomaly or sustained contraction, as the tariffs cover roughly $20 billion of Canadian exports.
