Switzerland is testing an unusual solution to slow the melting of glaciers in the Alps: sheep's wool. Researchers have covered a portion of the Tsanfleuron glacier with wool blankets, to see if the natural material can protect the ice as effectively as the synthetic pads used today.
Only about 0.02 percent of the surface of Switzerland's glaciers is covered by protective materials, but scientists say that reducing greenhouse gas emissions - which come mainly from fossil fuels - remains the only meaningful long-term way to slow ice loss.
