It is learnt that out of the 40 highly vulnerable lakes identified in Sikkim, 16 have been classified into specific categories.
Glaciers in the high Himalayan regions of Himachal Pradesh are retreating, causing temperatures to rise. Consequently, glacial lakes are rapidly expanding. The 2025 assessment identified 2,076 glacial lakes at altitudes above 3,500 meters. This represents an increase of 710 compared to 2015. Their total area is 28.
