The ICES, a scientific reference body for fishing in the Atlantic, recommends an unexpected doubling of the quota, the maximum quantity of mackerel that can be sinned in 2027. By 2026, the fall had been spectacular, as the species is not doing well. This good news for fishermen does not change the situation: the mackerel remains largely overfished in the Atlantic.
The mackerel stock is improving, and significantly more blue whiting and herring can also be caught next year than marine scientists recommended this year.
The demersal fish are so well off that ICES recommends increasing the maximum allowable catch for all three stocks, mackerel, cod and North Sea herring.
