Burnham: I have not proposed return to EU freedom of movement
Prime Minister Andy Burnham has ruled out reinstating European freedom of movement, vowing to make the public 'the boss' in deciding Britain's future relationship with Europe.
Recent remarks by Burnham fueled speculation regarding a potential return to European freedom of movement, prompting him to tell MPs in the Commons there was 'no confusion at all' about his position.
In an ITV interview airing on Tuesday, Burnham stated an 'honest discussion' is needed on how migration has changed since Brexit, noting data-sharing losses with European partners have 'led to more illegal migration because we can't share data anymore.'
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood emphasized that Labour must abide by its manifesto ruling out freedom of movement, and declined to 'indulge' in questions about her personal opinion on the issue.
Draft texts for a food and agriculture deal have been circulated among 27 European members, as the Cabinet plans to 'explore options' for a long-term relationship at a Brussels summit on November 20.
