Bryan Kohberger's Hearings Vacated Amid Efforts to Disqualify Judge
The amended order cancels three hearings and sets new deadlines as Kohberger seeks to disqualify the judge and withdraw his guilty plea.
On Thursday, Fourth Judicial District Judge Steven Hippler vacated upcoming hearings in Bryan Kohberger's post-conviction case, issuing an amended scheduling order that removes previously set dates.
Kohberger is attempting to withdraw his guilty plea for the November 13, 2022, murders of four University of Idaho students—Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle, Madison Mogen, and Kaylee Goncalves—alleging he was "convinced to falsely confess" through "coercion, disinformation, false promises."
Claiming the judge cannot remain neutral, the defense filed a motion to disqualify Hippler, citing his previous characterization of the defendant as a "faceless coward" and the "worst of the worst."
A new schedule requires Kohberger to amend his petition by January 13, 2027, and complete evidence gathering by July 7, 2027, before the court sets further hearing dates.
If legal issues remain unresolved, parties must contact the court by August 2, 2027, to schedule a status conference and potential evidentiary hearing.
